What We're Fighting For

It cannot be denied that the rights of women across the country are under attack. We have seen states move to enact restrictions on reproductive health care that can only be described as inhumane and, at times, even archaic. Also, we continue to await multiple court decisions that could have serious implications for Granite Staters’ access to reproductive health care. This constantly changing landscape has created fear and uncertainty across New Hampshire regarding reproductive freedom.Recognizing this, the Senate Democrats have filed multiple pieces of legislation this term to protect a women’s right to choose and expand access to care. Instead of working with us to do so, Senate Republicans rejected placing the question of a right to an abortion on the ballot and moved to develop a reporting system on every single individual receiving abortion care in the state that will also require an ultrasound be performed at every abortion, regardless of the stage of pregnancy.The Senate Democrats know that Granite Staters want women to have their rights protected and that they trust women to make decisions about their own health. Regardless of the obstacles we face, the Senate Democrats will never give up the fight to kick politicians out of the exam room once and for all.

Protecting Reproductive Freedoms

New Hampshire’s housing crisis and the need to develop affordable housing options for our residents is a top issue for our constituents. The high cost of housing and the dangerously low vacancy rates impact endless facets of our state and the lives of those who live here. Without the appropriate levels of housing stock, businesses will continue to face a tight job market, stunting our economic growth. This also means individuals and families must have hard conversations about their futures- whether they can afford to start a family, where they can afford to live, and what opportunities they can take on, like running for or serving in one of our many volunteer positions and agencies across the state.Our communities need to have the ability to be more adaptive to their individual needs and allow for increased opportunities when it comes to their zoning structures. Democrats will continue to work to develop solutions to the real problems Granite Staters are facing.

Affordable Housing

This year, the Senate Democrats brought forward multiple bills to prevent gun violence in New Hampshire. New Hampshire has already faced an active shooter who had the clear intention of committing a mass casualty incident, we have already seen multiple attempts of shootings at New Hampshire schools, and we have seen countless incidents of gun violence across the state. Recognizing that reality, the Senate Democrats sponsored legislation this year requiring mandatory background checks for commercial gun purchases, allowing for a judge to implement extreme risk protection orders, establishing waiting periods, and instituting gun-free school zones. In response to these efforts, the Republicans showed no interest in addressing gun violence in New Hampshire with anything more than thoughts, prayers, and claims that New Hampshire is different. This irresponsible decision by the Senate Republicans places all of us, especially our children, at risk in our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our places of worship, the State House, and, in fact, everywhere across New Hampshire. Regardless of the Senate Republicans’ refusal to take any meaningful action to combat gun violence, Senate Democrats will continue to fight for measured and responsible efforts to prevent gun violence that respect the Second Amendment. We know that gun violence can and does happen in New Hampshire, and that we cannot afford to wait in taking legislative action. Granite Staters demand action now.

Gun Safety

The New Hampshire Senate Democrats seek to mitigate the childcare crisis by improving affordability to quality childcare for more families, increasing support to childcare providers (the workforce behind the workforce), and ensuring the state has the capacity to effectively serve working families. The current childcare crisis negatively impacts NH businesses and families, because if a family cannot find affordable childcare, it may mean that both parents are not able to work full time, or even part time, without sacrificing quality care for their children. Investing in quality, affordable childcare is an investment in the future of New Hampshire, and action on this pressing issue is long overdue.

Following the passage HB 1665, relative to student eligibility for the education freedom accounts program, Senator Altschiller issued the following statement:Senator Debra Altschiller (D-Stratham), stated, “We as legislators have a duty to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars and ensure that all students have access to an education that will prepare them for the future. The runaway train that has become the EFA program accomplishes neither of those duties, and in fact, flies in direct opposition to them.“With little to no oversight over the EFA program, no auditing of participants, and unclear outcomes for students, it is unfathomable that we are once again expanding this program only 10 months since the last expansion– all while the Senate Republicans continue to refuse to place any meaningful guardrails on this program.“As the state is already facing multiple court cases for under-funding public education, diverting even more money to the EFA program can only be seen for what it is, a coordinated attack to cripple our public school system in favor of private, often religious schools, that pick and choose their body and then, and segregate children into belief systems.”

Senate Democrats Advocate Against Out-of-Control Government Spending

Following the Fiscal Committee approving $2.5 million in ARPA funds for Emergency Shelters, providing the funds for SB 406, making an appropriation to the department of health and human services to increase rates for shelter programs, Senator Fenton issued the following statement:Senator Donovan Fenton (D-Keene), stated, “I was pleased to see the Fiscal Committee move forward today on approving vitally needed funds for our emergency shelters, which will fund my SB 406. New Hampshire continues to face an undeniable homelessness crisis, and these funds will help ensure that shelters are able to keep their doors open throughout the year.&nbsp;“Make no mistake, this is only a stopgap measure to address our homelessness crisis - it is necessary in order to keep our shelters open, but it will not solve the crisis. We must commit to act on the causes of homelessness in New Hampshire and not simply the symptoms. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Legislature to implement policies that will prevent housing insecurity and homelessness in the future, and to truly ensure everyone has a safe place to rest their heads in the Granite State”

Senator Fenton Applauds Fiscal Committee Moving Forward on&nbsp;Funding for Emergency Shelters

Following the passage HB 1569 and the amended HB 1370, relative to eliminating voter identification exceptions, Senator Soucy and Senator Perkins Kwoka issued the following joint statement:Senate Democratic Leader Soucy (D-Manchester) and Senator Perkins Kwoka (D-Portsmouth), stated, “New Hampshire runs accurate and secure elections. Even Governor Sununu, following the November 2020 General Election, said,&nbsp; ‘Here in New Hampshire our elections are secure, accurate, and reliable—there is no question about it.’&nbsp;&nbsp;“Therefore, as elected officials, we have a responsibility to lead with integrity and be clear with the voters about what is happening with our elections, not further the narrative that there is voter fraud going on. HB 1569 would disenfranchise voters without reason - there is no voter fraud in New Hampshire.&nbsp;“The efforts by Senate Republicans today to insert unnecessary barriers into the voting process by making dramatic changes to New Hampshire election laws, especially with the abolishment of the Qualified Voter Affidavit, will only disenfranchise voters and create unnecessary long lines. Our voters this fall deserve to walk into the voting booth without confusion. These bills create a major change and will lead to disenfranchisement of same day registrants.&nbsp;“Both HB 1569 and the amended HB 1370 will increase costs and drive down turnout for one of our most sacred democratic traditions, election day. We trust our local election officials to run secure elections, and we should not be placing this unnecessary burden on New Hampshire voters in an attempt to solve a problem that does not exist.”
